Hurricane Sports offers girls volleyball in the fall. The sport is offered for home schooled students, as well as traditionally schooled students whose school does not offer volleyball.
For girls, we offer volleyball at the middle school, junior varsity and varsity levels. Tryouts and registration are held in May and there is some practice and conditioning during the summer months. Games begin around the middle of August and continue through the middle of October.
Games are generally no further than 1 hour away, and it is the parents' responsibility to get their athlete to the games, although car pooling is encouraged and often available.
2019 Season Information
It is so exciting to see things coming together so quickly and so well for the upcoming year of Hurricanes’ Volleyball. It is truly a testament to the to the quality of program that was built over the years and tended by the Zdoneks, Coach Kerri, and others who have been with the program for quite some time.
I wanted to take a few minutes to share some exciting announcements and opportunities with you and encourage you to start connecting with Hurricane’s Volleyball even now as we prepare for the 2019 season.
We are thrilled to announce that Dawn Taylor has agreed to serve as the Volleyball Administrator. She has 5 years experience as the Hurricanes Football Administrator and brings a wealth of knowledge and insight to the job. She and I are already having a great time planning for next season.
We will make 2019 coaching announcements sometime in early 2019, Lord-willing.
Off-Season Conditioning and Tournaments:
We are excited to be able to offer high quality off-season conditioning and tournaments for all teams this year. We are very pleased with the low price we are able to offer for club-level training, and we hope that every one of you will participate. This conditioning is open to all girls and is not reserved only for those who were on the teams last season. It will be great time for your daughter to learn the sport and build relationships with other girls her age if she is considering joining our teams next season!
Middle School Conditioning: Coach Kerri will be leading weekly conditioning for the middle school girls beginning with a fun, open-gym time on Thursday, December 27th from 4-6 pm at Salem UMC. Beginning the first week of January, the middle school girls will meet every Thursday from 4-6 pm at Salem United Methodist Church, 2700 White Horse Road. The middle school girls will also participate in 3 A-Town Friendship Tournaments this year. The cost for the middle school training, including the A-Town tournaments will be $200. If your child cannot participate in the tournaments and just wants to be a practice player, let Coach Kerri know, and she will lower the price for you.
JV/V Conditioning: Coach Lauren (those of you who were here over the past few years no doubt remember our former varsity coach) will be working with the JV/V girls twice each week on M/TH evenings from 7-9 pm at Grace Baptist Fellowship, 37 Pinckney Street, Greenville. The first 30 minutes or so of those practices will involve conditioning, while the remaining time will be spent working on specific skills and position training. We believe this combination will help the girls really excel and see their skill set grow each week— as will their confidence on the court and their relationships with one another. The cost for the twice-weekly JV/V training will be $20/week or $60/month. The tournament fees will be in addition to that. The JV/V training is slated to start the first full week of January, so stay tuned for further details.
A-Town Tournament Dates: We understand that planning ahead affords us all a lot of freedom, so we wanted to go ahead and give you the A-Town tournament dates for the spring, so you could mark them down now. These tournaments give our girls a great opportunity to try out the new skills they are learning in the off-season, so they’ll be even more prepared when try-outs and then next season roll around. We will participate in A-Town Tournaments on January 26, February 23, and March 30. Naturally, participation in all 3 tournaments is not a requirement, but we would love to field teams for each of those.
Outreach Opportunity: Wanting to encourage the girls to see that God can use whatever He puts in their hand in His service, we are planning an outreach event sometime this spring to allow the JV/V girls to use their skills to put on a mini-volleyball camp for elementary aged girls. More details about that outreach will be available after the first of the year.
Connect with us!!
One of the elements of Hurricane Volleyball that we are really wanting to build upon in the days ahead is a sense of community. The families God has brought together are truly amazing, and we look forward to growing even closer as a group as the program progresses.
Facebook Page!! We have our own Greenville Hurricanes Girls’ Volleyball Facebook page, and we invite all of you to join us there! We will regularly post pictures, updates, and more, so “like” us now so you don’t miss a thing! https://facebook.com/CanesVolleyball/ (Feel free to send us pictures from last season, so we can start to populate the page even now.)

HUGE!! Exciting Opportunity!
As we continue to grow, we have the incredible opportunity this season to purchase our own set of volleyball standards (poles, net, etc.) That purchase will give us a lot more control and flexibility as we seek a more permanent home for Hurricane Volleyball. We have found a great set, and we hope to have it in place in time for the off-season conditioning.
We need to raise about $4,000 to be able to purchase the standards and prepare the gym for Hurricane Volleyball, and we would love to be able to do it largely through the gifts of the Hurricanes Volleyball family. As I read through the end of the year surveys, I saw how many of you noted, as our family did, that Hurricane Volleyball played an important role in the relationships and growth of our daughters, and I invite you to join with us to make that experience even better in the years ahead. (As we will hopefully not have to scramble to find a gym ever again.) 🙂
I invite you to make an end-of-the-year, tax-deductible donation to the Hurricane’s Volleyball fund by clicking here: https://greenvillehurricaneathletics.siplay.com/MySportsStore (specific amounts are offered but you can combine amounts to make a customized donation) or by sending a check to Greenville Hurricanes, c/o Shelley Madson, 214 Traymore Way, Greer, SC 29650, and noting that it is for Volleyball. Any amount you can donate would go a long way toward reducing our fund-raising efforts and allowing us to focus solely on training and building relationships with our girls.
I cannot wait to see you all again! If you are so inclined, I’d love to know if your daughters are planning to participate in the off-season conditioning and if you have any suggestions for the upcoming season.
